Bob Marley's son Ziggy says singer used to 'box' and 'spank' him
Bob Marley used to box and spank his young son, Ziggy Marley claims in a revealing portrait of the reggae legend.
The 43-year-old has opened up about life with his father in an interview with US website The Daily Beast.
Marley says his dad, who died 30 years ago at the age of 36, beat him sometimes with a belt.
“You’d get a spanking or a good whipping with the belt if you didn’t listen carefully,” he says.
“I used to jump my fence and go check my friends across the street.
“I remember one time he told me: ‘Don’t leave the yard’. As soon as he drove out, I left the yard and went over to my friend’s. On his way back down, he saw me in one of the yards.
“He caught me and gave me a nice belt beating.
“It’s nothing to cry about, either. That’s how we do it in Jamaica. It’s no big deal.
“He taught us discipline, ruggedness and survivability. We have that make-up."
Ziggy also recalls how Bob loved to box: “I remember me and him boxing, and he hit very hard when he boxed,” the Jamaican says.
“He toughened us up, you know? He always wanted us to be tough, so he gave us that tough treatment.”
Bob Marley died of skin cancer on May 11, 1981.

Blake Lively's diet tips revealed by celebrity trainer
The man who whipped Blake Lively into shape for the Green Lantern has revealed the actress’s diet secrets.
Celebrity trainer Bobby Strom worked with the blonde and her co-star Ryan Reynolds when they were filming the movie in New Orleans last year.
And he says that he fed the stars a strict diet that included porridge, flaxseed and almond milk.
Strom not only trained the two actors, he also became their personal chef during the gruelling shoot.
The 54-year-old says: “I advocate a lifestyle. “It’s about coaching people, encouraging them so they can live a normal life, go out to dinner and order something off a menu.
“With this project I did all the cooking. For breakfast I made Blake and Ryan eat oatmeal."
He said for lunch he treated Lively, 23, and Reynolds, 34, to protein, such as chicken or tuna, and salad.
Dinner was more of the same with perhaps a portion of sweet potato or brown rice with chicken, fish or lean steak for a variation, he said.
Off screen the pair were advised to stay away from alcohol if they wanted to maintain their lean figures.

Tatum O’Neal has opened up about her drugs bust – and her alleged attempt to avoid arrest – by comparing her case to the Anthony Weiner scandal.
The Oscar-winner’s revelations come as she promotes her upcoming reality TV show, Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals.
The 47-year-old gives a candid interview to US website The Daily Beast.
Speaking of her 2008 arrest for buying crack cocaine near her New York flat, she claims the police officer that booked her was pleased he caught a celebrity.
O’Neal says: “The cop was extremely joyful, when he found out who I was, to have made the arrest.
“He really wanted to make me feel bad and embarrass me, so that’s why he told the story about me trying to get out of it [by allegedly saying: ‘Do you know who I am?’].”
Then, speaking about the Weiner sex scandal that has dominated US headlines for the past three weeks, she says: “If the press wanted to do to me what they’re doing to Anthony Weiner…I mean I didn’t cheat on my wife, hold my penis and send pictures.
“I did something illegal and I got caught.
“And, actually, it ended up being a good thing because it stopped the run I may have been on.”
